Inspiration:

I had the idea for 'Transience' while at Glyndebourne, East Sussex. It just came into my head, the image of a cherry blossom tree, the beauty of the blossom which seems to appear so fleetingly. The combination of the Japanese 'Sakura' and the story of 'Madame Butterfly', an opera I’d seen many times whilst working for the English National Opera, had to be worked out later. With the trees already providing a metaphor in Japanese culture for beauty and mortality, it couldn't have fitted better with the story of the geisha, Cio-Cio-San.
