Work in Progress of the Harrietsham sculpture
As with all my sculptures I begin with a metal armature, aluminum wire for smaller pieces, or as in this case, welded steel for larger ones. I then use mesh and wire to develop the shape further using my drawings as a guide.
I then cover the shape with hessian dipped in plaster to unify it and make the armature more rigid. This is then painted with shellac to seal the plaster and prevent it from drawing moisture from the clay.
I can then begin to add clay which I do in small rough pieces, gradually building up the desired shape as I go.
For this sculpt, once the shape was created and smoothed out, I had to begin to draw out the illustrations and then build them up into bas -relief.
